My Standard Paper...(Final Draft)

What do you think of when matter and energy transformation comes to your mind? You are probably thinking about solids, liquids, and gases. These are the most common topics when someone thinks of matter and energy transformation.

Inside matter, a solid acts like marbles. What I mean by marbles, is that since solid is in one state (does not move around like a liquid or gas) they stay together but with all of the energy they never stop moving in place. Matter is made up a few things, the most common is atoms. The atoms inside a solid are moving but not moving around. They are always touching each other.

The only difference from solid to liquid is that liquid is “free”. If a liquid is in a glass it takes the shape of the glass, right? If you dump the water onto the counter, what will it do? It will lose the shape of the cup and become “free”. Since there are atoms in everything (matter) the atoms are always moving, sometime touching, but are always running around like “crazy people”! It’s funny if you think about it, liquid change when it is put into different but solids don’t.

Gases are a little different on the other hand. A gas is always going different places, it hardly never stays together. The atoms inside a gas NEVER touch each other, because of how much free space there is. A gas is always moving because of the energy the atoms have to get in and out of a gas, to go into different properties of matter.

Can you answer the question, “What do you think about when matter and energy transformation comes to your mind?” Solids, liquids, and gases are what I think about when matter and energy comes into my mind.

End of the Day...

•I have posted my Project Planning Form on my blog.
•I have posted my Standard Paper (Rough Draft) on my Blog.

If I had to rate myself on the PBL Work Habits, I would but me in between exceeds and meets expectations.  I also think that the PBL Work Habits doc will be a good way to grade ourselves everyday on our PBL projects now and in the future.

OHpedia Final Reflection..

  • OH-Pedia Reflections...

•This oh-pedia project was a lot of fun. I was happy to get one of the harder standards out of the way than having to do them later. It was important for me to get the concept of the PBL so that I know what I will be doing the rest of the year for PBL.

•I was never very confident about what I would do in school. When I did this project and look back on what I had done, I was very proud of myself. This process has helped me know that I can do good work.

•When I did not have everyones oh-pedia lesson plan, I could not work on that when I needed to get it done. I became more patient than I thought I was but I still wanted to get it done so...

•The thing that satisfied me the most was how my lesson turned out. I was very happy with what I did. And I learned a more than I had when making the lesson wiki.

•Everything is this process was my "style". I mostly like making my own wiki. The benchmarks were the hardest out of all probably. I still had fun.

•I will remember my wiki that I made because that was the best part of the process for me.

What I will remember from this oh-pedia process.

What will I remember from this oh-pedia process? The 3 main things I will remember about the oh-pedia process is, making the wiki, creating a lesson, and learning how to make my own quiz.

When we first started the oh-pedia we created a wiki. The wiki had our standards on it. Mine was Properties of Matter. We had to write our benchmarks and find info on then, like videos, pictures, and websites. That took me about two weeks because I had nine benchmarks to make into a wiki. It was a lot of fun designing and adding my touches to what I know about matter.

After we finished the oh-pedia wiki, I decided to create my own wiki for my lesson plan. I made it look like a notebook that you would use for school. I made all of my summaries in the other wiki and made it smaller for my lesson plans for each benchmark. In a lesson I think it is better to have less writing and more pictures and videos, so that is what I did, add videos and pictures. This was my favorite part of the whole process because, even though it took a long time to make, I made it how I would like to learn about any topic.

We all had to make a quiz about our wikis and what we learned. Mostly we had to make a quiz for the middle schoolers, who I will be teaching, and see how well they could remember all of my info in my wiki. When making the quiz I kept looking back over my wiki making sure that the "students" would be able to answer with the info given in the wiki.

This process was fun! I enjoyed learning and making a wiki. I hope that everyone will enjoy my wikis. Overall, hope we have a chance to do another project like this one!

Daily Goals

Today I am needing to finish:

•My lesson for oh-pedia
•Rome and Greece venn diagram

Daily Goals Recap

Today I accomplished all of my goals. I finished my 4th benchmark and started my 5th benchmark. When I picked my benchmarks todo today I set the times and how long they were going to take me so thats why I thought I got everything done. I am still having trouble figuring out what to put on to my ohpedia because  am putting to much and to detailed when I am supposed to keep it simple. I am just having trouble with that, but that is the only thing that is taking so much time.

Overall today was a great day!!!!!

OHpedia update and Daily Goals

In my OHpedia wiki so far I feel that I am doing a good job. I am about 2 benchmarks behind but I am trying to finish 3 of my benchmarks today. Once I finished the second benchmark I had the "list" in my head of what I have to do before posting. Right now in the process of the ohpedia it is going well because I have the hang of things.  So at this point I am 2 benchmarks behind.

Daily Goals

•Finishing my 4th benchmark
•Start on Benchmark 5
•Today it is all about trying to finish all of my benchmarks!!

Friday, January 28, 2011

Daily Goals Recap

Today I accomplished almost everything. I accomplished finishing my benchmark number 3 and started number 4. I am also about to watch the Inca video. I have learned so much about volume, mass, gravity, density, and much more science terms. Today I had a lot of fun when Mr Randy helped me and explain a few of my benchmarks. It made it a lot easier for me to do.

Daily Goals 1/28/2011

•Watch the Inca video
•Work on my third benchmark
•Finish third benchmark on the wiki

Have R.E.P at 2.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Daily Goals Recap

Today I had completed my Mayan Project which took twice as long as i thought it did and I was unable to do PBL after lunch. I did my Mayan Project and added more to my wiki. So I got 2 out of my 4 or 5 things done. I will have to finish them on Friday.

Paragraph for today

I think middle school students that live in Florida should look at the OHpedia. I thought that they may need to do all of the Florida state standards that I have to do, so it would be a good place to get ideas and do lessons on it. This does not only have to be for home schooled or FLVS students. It could also be for kids at normal schools that want to do more. OHpedia is a fun way to learn and do state standards.

Daily Goals

•Mayan Project
•Finishing Benchmark 2
•Start on Benchmark 3
•Watch video
•Write about video

Monday, January 24, 2011

Daily Goals for 1/24/2010

I plan on doing:
•Work On OHpedia. Wiki entries.
•Wiki, Benchmark 2 and 3.

My Project Planning Form

Project Planning Form

Standard assigned (write out completely):
Standard #8: Properties of Matter

A. All objects and substances in the world are made of matter. Matter has two fundamental properties: matter takes up space and matter has mass which gives it inertia.

B. Objects and substances can be classified by their physical and chemical properties. Mass is the amount of matter (or "stuff") in an object. Weight, on the other hand, is the measure of force of attraction (gravitational force) between an object and Earth.

C.The concepts of mass and weight are complicated and potentially confusing to elementary students. Hence, the more familiar term of "weight" is recommended for use to stand for both mass and weight in grades K-5. By grades 6-8, students are expected to understand the distinction between mass and weight, and use them appropriately.

Essential Question:
How do students know what state standards they are expected to learn and are they able to demonstrate knowledge of the standards and reflect on their knowledge?

Things to include in OHpedia entry:
1.)Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also known as atomic theory) by using models to explain the motion of particles in solids, liquids, and gases.

2.)Differentiate between weight and mass recognizing that weight is the amount of gravitational pull on an object and is distinct from, though proportional to, mass.

3.)Explore and describe the densities of various materials through measurement of their masses and volumes.

4.)Classify and compare substances on the basis of characteristic physical properties that can be demonstrated or measured; for example, density, thermal or electrical conductivity, solubility, magnetic properties, melting and boiling points, and know that these properties are independent of the amount of the sample.

5.)Recognize that there are a finite number of elements and that their atoms combine in a multitude of ways to produce compounds that make up all of the living and nonliving things that we encounter.

6.)Recognize that elements are grouped in the periodic table according to similarities of their properties.

7.)Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also known as atomic theory) by recognizing that atoms are the smallest unit of an element and are composed of sub-atomic particles (electrons surrounding a nucleus containing protons and neutrons).

8.)Identify basic examples of and compare and classify the properties of compounds, including acids, bases, and salts.

9.)Distinguish among mixtures (including solutions) and pure substances.

Recap of My Days Goals...

My self check for the end of the day!

•In my blog this morning I wrote about what I wanted to achieve today. I thought that I did achieve my goals, I felt this way because at the end of the school day I felt proud of myself. I had achieved all of what I wanted today, today was the first PBL day that I felt I had gotten something done.

•Today I felt that I was focused more that normal. I also thought that I did not get off track with any of my work. Overall, today was a very productive day for me!

•What went well today? Today I finished all of my work and stayed on track, whenever I stay on track I get focused and never stray away from my work. Everything I accomplished today went very well!!

•The next time I work on PBL I need to get more organized. When I say organized I mean, to make a list, first to see how long everything will take me, and list it out so that I have time for a small recap of what I learned so far.

•On Friday, I need to meet with Randy and Amy to talk about my PBL schedule, because I missed Monday. If I have any work that I missed I could make it up then.

Daily Goals for 1/19/11

Today we are setting up our daily goals:

•Start on my science project. Researching, preparing, and find out what way I am going to present it in.
•Project planning form
•OHpedia

Standard #8

Big Idea 8: Properties of Matter (Alyssa)
(A. All objects and substances in the world are made of matter. Matter has two fundamental properties: matter takes up space and matter has mass which gives it inertia.

By grades 6-8, students are expected to understand the distinction between mass and weight, and use them appropriately.)
What I know about my project:
•I know that matter takes up space and that matter has masses.
•The mass inside the matter is built up inside an object/item.
( I do not know much on this topic but I hope to learn more when I start my researching.)
